Flow State is a myth
Deliberate Practice vs. Flow State: The Path to Mastery
For those unfamiliar with the term, Flow State, also known as “the Zone,” is a state of high performance characterized by effortless focus on the task at hand. It brings increased happiness, higher intrinsic motivation, greater creativity, and improved emotional regulation.
I’ve spent considerable time exploring how to enjoy my work and become deeply engaged in it, and I discovered that Flow State was the key.
Despite following advice from various YouTube gurus, I struggled to maintain focus and productivity. I’ve come to realize that I was avoiding the initial discomfort that precedes entering the Flow State. I would give up when I became bored or when the task grew challenging.
There are two primary approaches to becoming a focus machine:
Deliberate Practice: Repeatedly performing the same task until mastery is achieved, exemplified by the 10,000-Hour Rule.
Flow State
These two approaches are like two sides of the same coin. Flow State is attained through Deliberate Practice. Once you push past the initial resistance, you’ll discover the beauty of Flow and limitless focus.
Pain is a constant in our lives, as Buddha taught. While pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.
In a future article, I’ll delve into the interplay between Pain and Pleasure.
Until then, enjoy the journey 🦋❤️
